1618 hamlets in 13 districts of Bihar arsenic-affected

Patna: The underground water of 1618 hamlets in 13 districts of Bihar have arsenic contents of more than permissible limits prompting the government to set up arsenic treatment plants in 10 districts at a cost of Rs1100 crore.

Bihar minister for Public health and Engineering department (PHE) Ashwini Kumar Choubey said today that after examination of underground water of the districts, situated on both flanks of Ganga, it had been found that 1618 hamlets in 13 disticts did have arsenic of more than the permissible limits.

The water treatment plant at Ara in Bhojpur district was ready, the treatment plants in three other districts were near completion and work on rest were under progress, he said. Read the rest of this entry »

Two arms smugglers held in Bihar

Two persons were arrested for smuggling arms at Bariyarpur railway station in Bihar’s Munger district, the police said today.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided a compartment of Gaya-Howrah Express late last night and arrested Santosh Singh and Shankar Singh. Two guns and 20 live cartridges were recovered, they said.

The duo, residents of Khalaspur village in Bhojpur district, were brought to Jamalpur Government Railway Police station for interrogation, police said.

Clean Ganga initiative gets Rs 1,394.11 cr boost

NEW DELHI — Providing a major impetus to the ‘Mission Clean Ganga’ project, the government has allocated Rs 1,394.11 crore for Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, iIn his budget speech on February 27, had announced the doubling of the allocation for the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA), the apex body for the Ganga River Basin, to Rs 500 crore for the financial year 2010-11. Read the rest of this entry »

Six injured, 80 houses gutted in Bihar fire

MUNGER (Bihar): Six people were injured and over 80 houses gutted in a fire that broke out in Shikarpur village of Bihar’s Munger district on Tuesday, police sources said.

100 Maoist rebels attacked a village in Bihar’s Munger district

Deepak, 40, a senior leader of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was arrested late Tuesday on the outskirts of Kolkata, the state-run Doordarshan television reported.

Deepak is known to be a close associate of senior CPI-Maoist politburo member Kishenji alias Koteswar Rao, who has been leading rebel operations in eastern India, according to intelligence sources.

Deepak was in charge of the rebels’ armed operations in West Bengal, of which Kolkata is the capital, and adjoining Bihar, Orissa and Jharkhand states. Read the rest of this entry »
